The issue of proper prospective employee screening -- and the periodic and incident-specific updates once they are hired -- is at the forefront of the Orlando nightclub shooting.Complaints that shooter Omar Mateen -- who worked for G4S -- made homophobic  and racial comments were ignored because Mateen is a Muslim, according to FloridaToday.com.

Before the shooting, Mateen called 911 to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State and following it, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the massacre

In a minor, yet relevant example, a security officer at an Illinois supermarket was found by police to be wanted. How is it that his employer was unaware of this, when arrest warrants are public documents?

Security companies, big and small, need to have an internal affairs system, similar to police departments. They must investigate their own to do everything possible to gain intelligence and prevent such tragedies.
