A preview of an upcoming article being posted to the IFPO Newsletter then the IFPO articles archive:  "Measuring and Evaluating CPTED"  by Lawrence J. Fennelly, CHS III, CPO, CSS and Marianna A. Perry, M.S., CPP

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a multi-disciplinary approach to deterring criminal behavior through environmental design. CPTED strategies rely upon the ability to influence offender decisions that precede criminal acts. Fennelly and Perry discuss measuring and evaluating your CPTED strategy.  Here is an excerpt:

"Very little has been written on how to measure the effectiveness of your CPTED program.  Some work has been done in 2005 – see references for this material.

Let’s call the site in question “the complex” since CPTED covers the full spectrum.

CPTED-Chart
You get three years of data from the local police department and from the complex.  After a full assessment and review of the natural surveillance (Landscape Security) and natural access and territoriality, the complex hardens the target.

The job of security now must change to be more proactive.  In the past crimes of the past three years are to be addressed and programs such as Awareness or Neighborhood are implemented followed by Security making monthly reports on status of aspects of physical security."
