What the Industry Has to Say About the Certified Protection Officer [CPO] Program

"I would like to start by saying how pleased I am that there is finally a program for the working person in the security field who has not reached a management position."

- Phillip I. Palmar, Parma Community General Hospital, Parma, Ohio

"With the CPO designation, I now walk tall and speak with a high degree of authority on security issues among security practitioners, both in the private and public sectors. Especially when I speak among top police officers, they marvel at the dept of my knowledge of the secuirity and safety profession.

The skill acquired during my preparation for the examinations has also broadened my knowledged of security practice and enriched my handling of security issues in my newspaper.

Its beauty in my security column, Checkpoint which I would resurrect very soon in Financial Standard where I currently work as political editor, with bias for financial crimes and investigative journalism, is immesurable. It has prapared the grounds for a career switch to full time security practice in no distant future."

- Biyi Adegoroye

" Just to let you know that I received the certificate, lapel pin and IFPO I.d. card. My thanks goes to all the IFPO staff. It was a pleasure for me to study this course. The material was really clear and understandable. It was so pleasant that I immediately started with the Security and Supervision. It is also for me an honor to be the first CPO on the island of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles (for so far I know).

I will surely will like to promote the IFPO on the islands of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba due the fact that there are estimated 4000 people working in the security and about 115 security companies registered at the Chamber of Commerce. The bad thing about it that there is no regulation. That means that the security on the islands are like in the US like 35 years ago. There is a concept of a law for the regulation of security companies that still haven't been pass yet. One of the requirements are that all security officer will have to follow a course.

As a police inspector (lieutenant) working for the Department of Protective Services of the Police Force of the Netherlands Antilles (Which tasks are to protect government officials, buildings, prison and foreign dignitaries) I also have my own company that is specialize in giving training for security companies and sworn law enforcement officials. We developed lessons material in our own local language (Papiamento) and adapted them to the local situation. My next objective is to become a CPOI to give CPO and other IFPO classes on the islands. The curriculum of my course is written in Dutch because the Dutch is the official language on the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Recently Papiamento, Dutch and English became official language to. In the near future I would like to ask assistance of our fellow members in Holland to check the curriculum so I can fulfill the requirements to become a CPOI.

Once again I want to thank the whole IFPO and the HITS staff for this great course"

- Clarson Gomez

"I am currently enrolled in the SSMP Course. It is quite a piece of work! I have found it very beneficial in my day-to-day duties as Sergeant in a busy security department.

I have been working closely with a Supervisor that I often didn’t understand and frequently found myself questioning. The SSMP Course has facilitated better communication between us and I’m finding that some of the problems were in my own thinking, and that my Supervisor has reasons for the things that he does. Understanding these things has made my professional life much easier and much more pleasant.

I appreciate the things that you’ve taught me and hope to learn more."

-Sgt. Kris A. Highbargin, Battelle Organization

"The Certified Protection Officer material is probably the best training program that I have found for the continueing education of our Security Officers. Currently, I am sponsoring a "study group" amoung several of our senior officers which has been most rewarding. Each member of the group is tasked with the responsiblity of creating a presentation of
two chapters each month and present the material to the rest of the group as a training exercise. This has resulted in each of them developing their own "training libraries" for use at their individual facilities as well as deepening their knowledge of the material in preparation for their own CPO Certification. I am amazed at how each of them have developed their skills as trainers. As a result of this exercise, we are reaping a multiplication of benefits that will increase the professionalism of our entire security
workforce.

-Michael P. Wilson, Director, Quality and Training
Day and Zimmermann Security Services

"I would really advise this course to anyone who is in search of a class on security. The study guide is very complete and the references mentioned in each chapter make it really easy to do some self-education with regard to a particular subject. On the other hand, you really feel it's an American course which has its consequences on the language used and some items mentioned in the book. A European version would make the course unique and absolute."

-Reynout d'Haese Tyco ADT Belgium

"Ever since 1997 I’ve been training security and private investigators using International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO) educational programs. During that time I have lost count of the number of successful graduates from both the Certified Protection Officer (CPO) and Security Supervision and Management (SSMP) programs. Students have even gone on to obtain the prestigious designation of Certified in Security Supervision and Management (CSSM).

I have personally taken IFPO educational programs including their recently implemented Crime and Loss Investigations (CLIP) which I highly recommend to anyone who is considering a career in Security Management or Law Enforcement.

Employers in the security and private investigator industries should seriously consider using IFPO educational resources and programs for employee training. In a growing and rapidly expanding business, it is imperative that we keep up-to-date. IFPO does just that: they stay current and as such, I will continue to promote both the Foundation and its outstanding educational programs."

-Gary M. Williams, CPP CPOI, CSS, CPO
Advanced Security Services Edmonton, AB

"Lyndon Security Services is committed to the training of the Security Officers whom provide security services to our clients. We believe that to have a professional security company that provides security with integrity, the Security Officers providing the service must be receive quality training.

In stating that, Lyndon Security has been involved in the training of its Officers with the International Foundation of Protection Officers since 1988. The quality and continual improvement to the programs made available to this organization have been more than satisfactory. At the present 64% of our employees have graduated the CPO, CPOI or CSSM programs.

With stronger demands by government agencies for increased training on all levels of private security the IFPO has developed further professional security training with the "Protection Officer Academy". Within this affiliation Lyndon feels very confident that the level of instruction provided by this institution will meet or exceed the Foundations standards.

Graduates with the CPO, CPOI, CSSM are encouraged to contact our office and speak to any of our management group regarding a career in private security.
Lyndon would give professionally trained officers precedence over untrained officers when it comes to employment and job assignments."

-Erv Perry, Director of Operations Lyndon Security Services

"Hannon Security Services has always had a strong commitment to our training programs. In 1994 we graduated our first Certified Protection Officer candidate through the IFPO's Certified Protection Officer program. Since then, Hannon has graduated over 500 CPO's. We wouldn't be this committed to the IFPO and their training programs, if we didn't strongly believe their programs helped us attain a higher caliber Security Officer and that it benefited our customers. We know we are able to deliver a superior product because of the IFPO's training programs. We are proud of the partnership we have developed with the
IFPO over the years and encourage your company to the same."

-Nicholas Luciano Vice President Hannon Security Services, Inc.

"IFPO and their CPO and CSSM programs are cornerstones of our organization’s security training. The Certified Protection Officer program is mandatory for all Security Officers starting in the department. It exposes our security staff to a wide variety of industry related issues and prepares them for the high standards we expect of our staff. The Security Supervision and Management Program is also mandatory for all supervisors and managers working within the department. Staff has a high regard for the program and proudly display their certificates. I am a big believer in the International Foundation for Protection Officers and as a member of the International Advisory Council representing Canada, I am proud to be involved in an organization structured around the needs of the front line security officer and supervisor."

-Glen Kitteringham, M.Sc., CPP, FIISec, CSSM, CPO.
Senior Manager, Security & Life Safety Brookfield Properties

"We have been affiliated with the IFPO for almost seven years. During that time the Certified Protection Officer Course has been the backbone of our curriculum. Our students, though only in a high school setting, have done extremely well and many have gone on to go into not only security positions with solid growth paths but have even aspired and gone into the field of law enforcement.

We also belong to a State wide Association of Criminal Justice Instructors and many of them are now also adopting the CPO course as part of their curriculum. We not only have the blessing and approval of the New York State Department of Education but even have Articulation Agreements in place where colleges are giving our students (and others) up to six college credits for the successful completion of our program. Additionally, New York State offers a "Technical Endorsement " for the successful completion of a program in the field of Career and Technical Education and the endorsement for our Criminal Justice Studies course is directly linked to the students success in the IFPO!

For information about our implementation of the program or how you might explore looking into it, please contact me"

-Bob Sternfeld, Instructor Criminal Justice Studies
Southern Adirondack Education Center

"It gives me a lot of pleasure to recommend The International Foundation for Protection Officers training programs to anyone in the security industry. The IFPO offers a wide variety of training programs, beginning with entry level programs up to Security Supervision and Management.

Our department has implemented the Certified Protection Officer (CPO) program as a mandatory requirement for our officers. I personally have accomplished the CPO, SSMP and CSSM programs. These programs educate Protection Officers to grasp the fundamentals of security from the very beginnings.

The IFPO is a very well organized and professional organization. "

Brad Ibarra, CSSM, CPO Protection Coordinator Medtronics

"The training provided by IFPO is second to none. As an instructor of the program for many years, I think that it provides a complete over view of what a new security officers needs to start on his/her post or assignment.
I have been involved in all types of police training at the college level and at the academy level as an instructor. (retired police officer-27 yrs.)
I think that this training is as informative as any other classes I have taught.
The training is very valuable for students and it is an important resource for any security officer."

- Jerry Hutchinson Instructor Hannon Security

"My experience it mostly positive. Regarding the material, it is of course not that easy to understand everything if English is not your native language. This takes a lot of effort and time during study and examination. The content of the manual can always be discussed. If IFPO want this to be an international program the content should be changed. Some of the American history should be replaced with European history. This should only be "informative" information and should not be a part of the examination. The parts explaining how to behave, investigate, different types of equipment and so on is highly relevant and the final exam should be based on this. The examination with multiple choice questions is fine and should not be changed."

-Henrik Moeller DHL Denmark

"Studying the Protection Officers Training Manual, made me relive my 20 years of experience in security. I was glad to re-learn a lot of things I once knew, but had forgotten all about. Every aspect of a Protection Officers work was covered in such a structured and detailed way that I could immediately put the knowledge to use in our companies guarding procedures & training program. The exam put it all to the test, but confirmed me that hard work pays off. The CPO certification process made me decide to go all the way, and next on
the agenda was the CPOI certification. Both certificates have helped to improve my professional development."

-Werner Cooreman MAKRO Belgium

"The CPO program in general is good. It gives the student a "wider insight" in the security profession. The book is "very readable".... From my point of view the most interesting chapters are, the part about Investigation, Drugs, CSM and Terrorism."

-Jan Collander DHL Sweden

"Welcome to our first CPP Study Review. As the Chapter CPP Coordinator, I would like to encourage you to explore a couple of courses from the IFPO. The CSS (Certified Security Supervisor) and the CPO (Certified Protection Officer) courses provided me with a condensed and comprehensive source of CPP related offerings. When I completed the two courses…..I felt that I was at least ready to take the CPP Exam. Gave me just the confidence and jump start I needed!"

-Glen Hager, CPP, CPO, CSS; IBM Security Administrator; Lexington, KY.

"It was a surprise for me, that the contents of CPO training course provided so much useful information, about things I thought I already know. Most interesting parts of it were history information & topics related with people behavior, sociality, and similar. Technical topics were realy difficult and very detailed. I gained a lot of usefull knowledge from that. That makes certificate really valuable for everyone."

-Milagros Coira DHL Spain

"I'm excited about this whole process! I've been in the industry for a number of years... I've done everything from basic "door rattler" guard to Director of Corporate Security and I really understand the benefits of professional certifications."

- Kim Seavy, Charlemaigne Inc., Everett, WA

"I have a copy of the Protection Officer Training Manual. I like it. I think it should be in the back pocket of every Security Officer and in the library of every Security Manager, to be read and understood."

- Don P. Mattocks, Teaching Master, Georgian College

- Brian M. Angus, Metropol Base-Fort Security Group, Thompson, Manitoba
